Divorce and Remarriage

Spirit Quest International believes that God ordained the union between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24) "FOR THIS REASON A MAN WILL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE UNITED TO HIS WIFE, AND THEY WILL BECOME ONE FLESH.", Spirit Quest International also believes that God provided for a measure of redemption of man's choices. Therefore, Spirit Quest International does not judge or condemn, but seeks to bring into the "light" all those who in all circumstances, repent, confess, and accept Jesus as the Lord of their life, and live accordingly.

Divorce and Remarriage - Ministry
A divorced and remarried Christian may be eligible for consideration to receive an Associate Minister, Licensed Minister, or Ordained Minister credentials in Spirit Quest International when one of the following applies:

  1. The candidate's former spouse has died or remarried.
  2. The candidate was divorced and remarried prior to Christian conversion.
  3. The candidate's former marriage partner was guilty of sexual immorality (Matthew 5:31-32) "IT HATH BEEN SAID, WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, LET HIM GIVE HER A WRITING OF DIVORCEMENT: BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, SAVING FOR THE CAUSE OF FORNICATION. CAUSETH HER TO COMMIT ADULTERY: AND WHOSOEVER SHALL MARRY HER THAT IS DIVORCED COMMITTETH ADULTERY," and (Matthew 19:8-9) "HE SAITH UNTO THEM, MOSES BECAUSE OF THE HARDNESS OF YOUR HEARTS SUFFERED YOU TO PUT AWAY YOUR WIVES: BUT FROM THE BEGINNING IT WAS NOT SO. AND ISAY UNTO, WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION, AND SHALL MARRY ANOTHER. COMMITTETH ADULTERY: AND WHOSO MARRIETH HER WHICH IS PUT AWAY DOTH COMMIT ADULTERY."
  4. The candidate's former marriage partner was an unbeliever who willingly and permanently deserted the believing spouse (1st Corinthians 7:15) "BUT IF THE UNBELIEVING DEPART, LET HIM DEPART, A BROTHER OR A SISTER IS NOT UNDER BONDAGE IN SUCH CASES: BUT GOD HATH CALLED US TO PEACE."
  5. The candidate's divorce was based on circumstances that compromised the safety of the candidate and/or children.

Divorce and Remarriage - Local Church Membership
Spirit Quest International recognizes that unions between a man and a woman have been accomplished through means other than "religious" actions or sanctions. While marriages presided over by legal entities are recognized as acceptable, Spirit Quest International strongly recommends that the marriage union/ceremony be presided over by a Minister of the Gospel.

  1. Marriage Entanglements Before Conversion
There are now among Christian people those who become entangled in their marriage relations in their former lives of sin and who do not see how these matters can be adjusted. Spirit Quest International recommends that these people be received into membership and that their marriage complications be left in the hands of the Lord (1st Corinthians 7:17,20,24) "BUT AS GOD HATH DISTRIBUTED TO EVERYMAN, AS THE LORD HATH CALLED EVERYONE. SO LET HIM WALK. AND SO ORDAIN I IN ALL CHURCHES."   "LET EVERY MAN ABIDE IN THE SAME CALLING WHEREIN HE WAS CALLED."   "BRETHREN. LET EVERY MAN, WHEREIN HE IS CALLED, THEREIN ABIDE WITH GOD."
  2. Common-law Marriages
Spirit Quest International recommends that in no case shall persons be accepted into membership who are known to be living in a common-law state of matrimony. Such prospective candidates should be counseled and their union confirmed in the church prior to membership.
